Daisy Sheff (b. 1996) makes painting and sculpture which embraces the narrative, theatrical, and folkloric. Based in rural Northern California, Sheff makes work in the legacy of the Bay Area Nut Art movement of the 1970s most closely associated with Roy De Forest which privileged humor, absurdity, and the phantasmagoric.

Sleeping Bag Under Grazing Sheep depicts a naive and haphazard cast of animals, plants, and human figures painted atop a sturdy wood frame and rocks. The wild possibility in the painting’s imagined territory feels at once like a fairytale and a forgotten missive from the past.
